Your differential performs a very important and demanding job, taking you places, year after year, without thought or concern. The pinion gear and ring are integral components that transfer power from your drive shaft to the axle. Most of the time you never think about these parts. In fact, under normal use and maintenance, pinion bearings (click here to to find out more about our Install kits) can last a very long time and many, many miles. But there may come a time when you will have to replace these hard working components.
How do you know if your ring & pinion have gone bad? Here are some of the most common symptoms:
- Service Past Due. Like all components of your vehicle, your differential needs periodic service
- Leaking Differential Oil
- Strange Noises…A “howl or whine” during acceleration over a small or large speed range is usually caused by worn ring and pinion gears (or improper gear set up)
- A “whirring” noise while decelerating at any or all speeds is most likely caused by bad pinion bearings or loose pinion bearing preload
- Unusual Smells
